During the times of the Soviet Union, space exploration was one of the main priorities. And a rocket undertaking the first flight into space departed from the USSR. That happened on the 12th of April, 1961. This day became an important part of history. The cosmonaut on board was pilot Yuri Alekseevich Gagarin . Before the flight Yuri Gagarin was given an envelope where the secret cipher was – the figure “25”, as it was found out later.

TASK 10. TRANSLATE THIS TEXT FROM ENGLISH INTO RUSSIAN.

Yuri Gagarin was buried near the Kremlin wall on the Red Square.

Today the Gjatsk city where the first cosmonaut spent many years has been renamed to Gagarin.

Level 3/ Forms 9-11. Listening:

  1. Listen to the short articles and try to learn information:
  1. Konstantin Eduardovich Tsiolkovsky – the founder of astronautics in Russia, put forward several ideas about space travel. Tsiolkovsky’s idea of spaceship was based on the use of liquid fuels. His calculations were used in modern theory of cosmonautics and practical space travel.
  2. Sergey Pavlovich Korolyov- is a famous and founder of practical cosmonautics. He was the chief constructor of the first Earth sputniks and spaceships. Then followed rockets to the Moon, Mars, and Venus.
  3. The space age began on October 4, 1957. On that day, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics launched Sputnik 1, the first artificial to circle the Earth. Its capsule weighing 83.6 kilograms went into Earth orbit carrying a radio transmitter whose “bleeps” (pips) were received on the ground.
  4. Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin, a Soviet air force pilot, was the first human to travel in space. The Soviet cosmonaut circled the earth on April 12, 1961. From blastoff to landing, his trip around the earth lasted 1 hour and 48 minutes. The news about space flight of the Soviet cosmonaut immediately flew over the world.
  1. Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman-cosmonaut in the world. From June 16 until June 19, during a group flight with V. Bykovsky, the spaceship “Vostok-6” piloted by Tereshkova made in 70 hours and 41 minutes 48 circuits around the earth, covering a distance of about 2 million kilometers. When she was in space, she was there together with her “space-brother” Valery Bykovsky. This was another great achievement – launching two spaceships at the same time.
  1. In 1965 the cosmonaut Alexey Leonov went outside wearing a space suit connected to the capsule by a line which also carried his oxygen supply, becoming the first person to “walk” in space. From the first experiments scientists went over to systematic exploration of space.
  1. Say true or false.

1 Konstantin Eduardovich Tsiolkovsky – the founder of astronautics in Great Britain, put forward several ideas about space travel.

  1. Sergei Pavlovich Korolyov was the chief constructor of the first telephone.
  2. On October 4, 1967 the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics launched Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite to circle the earth.

4. Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin, a Soviet air force pilot, was the first human to travel to Mars.

5. Valentina Tershkova was the first woman-cosmonaut in the world.

6. Alexei Leonov went outside wearing a space suit connected to the capsule by a line which also carried his oxygen supply, becoming the first person to “walk” in space.

Key: 1- false, 2 — false, 3 — false, 4 — false, 5 — true, 6 — true.

Reading Space Exploration

People often think that the age of space exploration began with the first spaceships in the 1950’s and 1960’s, though in fact, astronomers had been exploring the universe long before the beginning of space flights. Galileo made the first optical telescope used for astronomy in 1609. Later scientists got a lot more information about the solar system and its planets with the help of interplanetary probes, space capsules that carry special equipment and send information back to Earth.

From the beginning of the space age, both the Soviet Union and the United States were active in the exploration of the solar system. Both countries had their own space programmers, competing with each other. Both countries sent their probes to the Moon, to Venus, Mars and, Later, to Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Anyhow a real breakthrough in space exploration was the beginning of manned space flights. The first manned flight took place on April 12, 1961 when Yuri Gagarin went into orbit in the Soviet Vostok 1 spaceship and proved that man could survive in space.

Express the same in English

Match the dates and achievements in the exploration of space:

1969 1986 1962 1971 1957 1963 1975 1986 1961

  1. USSR launches first satellite, Sputnik 1.
  2. Yuri Gagarin (USSR) is the first man in space.
  3. USA launches first communications satellite.
  4. Valentina Tereshkova (USSR) is the first woman cosmonaut.
  5. Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin (USA) land on the Moon.
  6. USSR sends two probes to Mars.
  7. USA and USSR cooperate in space; Apollo and Soyuz craft dock (link) in orbit.
  8. Pioneer spacecraft (USA) leaves solar system.
  9. The Soviet space station Mir is launched into space.

Home task and results

Write down your home task:

  1. Imagine the lifestyle on Mars or another planet. Tell about your impressions

And now some words about our lesson.

Every team was very active today. We have done much work during our lesson. Thank you for the lesson and your excellent work.

In conclusion I want to give you your marks……..

Stand up! The lesson is over. Have a rest. Goodbye. See you next lesson.
