My name is Sarah Burnett (she/her), and I created Balance Is The Key to nurture a holistic approach to mental health and wellness. As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, I specialize in trauma therapy among teens, young adults and individuals, parent coaching and child therapy. I utilize various treatment modalities including NLP (neuro-linguistic programing), ART (accelerated resolution therapy), CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), mindfulness and yoga to help you bring your personal life, relationships and professional world back into balance.
TRAUMA THERAPY / INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING
I feel passionate about helping individuals clear previous traumas, pain and feelings of helplessness through The RTM Protocol — a neurological intervention that reconsolidates the disturbing memory and clears your post-traumatic stress symptoms so you get back to living the life you were meant to live. Once the limiting self-beliefs and previous traumatic events are fully released, your mind/body/spirit is now free to manifest healthy, positive and joyful patterns and relationships within your life. The transformation is amazing and beautiful to observe. And it not only works with adults, but children too!
I specialize in working with kids to heal, cope and transition through the rollercoaster of childhood through play therapy. Play is the natural language of children and toys are their world! Through a variety of expressive and creative modalities kids feel safe to share and process their concerns related to siblings, friends, parents, school, low self-esteem, fears, stress, and sadness. Throughout session kids practice different mindfulness techniques, healthy coping skills and effective communication to ensure they are top of mind when frustrations return outside the office. I work with kids as young as 2-years-old and often through middle school age using play therapy techniques. With young children, parents are included in sessions early on to practice the new limit-setting language and to observe the play therapy process as I role model the language.
I love working with parents to empower the entire family unit. Parents are the therapeutic agent for change and with a toolbox full of new tangible skills, you’ll feel the family dynamic completely shift. A household full of yelling, arguments and disregard for others will transform into a warm, loving home where all members of the family feel respected and supported. As a Parent Coach, I work directly with the parents to ensure you master the limit-setting language and feel equipped when your child flips their lid and becomes defiant. Positive parenting tools and reward-based structures such as The Marble Jar and the Cozy Corner create a healthy, loving and positive dynamic between parent & child. Parents shift from saying mostly NO and consequences to saying YES and rewarding the good choice with a marble or token. This new language coupled with the marble jar has been deemed to be “magic” by some of my clients! My approach engages the entire family system to practice healthy coping skills, utilize constructive communication for conflict resolution, reframe negative self-talk, and role model present moment focus, impulse control and mutual respect. The more involved parents, caregivers and mentors become, the quicker the transformation unfolds and homeostasis returns.

Episode Overview [ edit | edit source ]
Twenty teens travel to a secret location to compete. Once there, they begin the Right to Stay competition that will send 4 of them home.
Summary [ edit | edit source ]
The fifth season of Endurance begins as 20 teenagers from around the country journey into the High Sierras, all hoping not to leave until they have earned the title of Endurance Champion. After a long trek (and a fall or two), the group finally makes their way up to the ridge, where JD is awaiting their arrival. He welcomes the group and warns them about the adventure they are embarking on. Not only do they have nature to contend with, but they will also have to accomplish things they never thought apossible and, ultimately, beat out the other players standing next to them. JD reminds the contestants that to win, they will have to get all 13 Endurance pieces. And this year there is one more element they should keep in mind: karma. How they play the game is going to be just as important as who wins it. The group is a little perplexed, but very excited to hear that no one will be going home this first day! JD sends them to go check out their lodging and says he will see them tomorrow.
The kids run off to discover their new home and are amazed to see that they will be living in treehouses! They excitedly run through the huts, claiming bunks and exploring all the levels of “the most awesome treehouses ever,“ as this year’s huts are quickly dubbed. They also discover a crow’s nest lookout point and a large wooden swing. They are all ecstatic to be there, and no one wants to think about anyone going home the next day.
In the morning, JD gathers the group together and gives them a clue about their first challenge: the right-to-stay mission. They will need speed, agility and balance … and four people will be going home! All are saddened by this news, but JD has the first of many surprises up his sleeve. One boy and one girl will be granted a huge advantage today — a free pass to avoid the right-to-stay mission! The catch this year is that the girls will choose the girl and the boys will choose the boy.
Once JD has left the contestants to make their decisions, the girls quickly and efficiently decide that the fairest method is to cast a silent vote. Each girl writes down her vote, and they end up with a tie between Kelsey and Darci. The girls decide to have a revote between those two girls. Kelsey, Cealey and Martina all cling onto each other while they await the result. Darci easily wins it — capturing all but one vote. Darci is very surprised and all congratulate her. Kelsey sheds a few tears, but Darci tells her to use this as motivation in the game.
With their vote complete, Taylor leads several girls to check on what the boys are up to. There has been nothing but chaos surrounding the vote in the guys’ hut. They bicker about the best way to decide, and matters become worse when the girls insert their opinions on how to make the decision. Adrian is convinced that he wants the pass the most and should therefore receive it. Eventually, Dakota has a brilliant idea: “Let’s pull names out of a hat!“ The group argues over whether drawing randomly is fair, but ultimately decides it is the easiest way. Who will be the lucky one?
Finally, JD gathers the group together to hear their decisions. The girls announce that they have chosen Darci, and the guys announce that Aric will receive the free pass. JD congratulates the first two official players of Endurance, but he has one little extra twist for the players. He reminds them of his warning about karma and announces that Darci and Aric will now be able to return the favor and grant one more free pass each! The kids are completely caught off-guard and start yelling out suggestions for who to pick. Darci tells JD she’s giving it to Kelsey, since they had a tie-breaker. As the guys await their fate, Adrian appears nervous and hopeful. But Aric surprises everyone when he chooses Alex. Adrian is crushed and feels betrayed. JD congratulates the four players who get to skip the right-to-stay mission, but warns the others that they must now earn their spots on Endurance.
The group gathers at the water, and JD explains the mission. Each player will have to walk on balance beams over the water to complete five laps back and forth. The last two players to finish the course will be automatically eliminated. The girls will be competing first.
The girls’ game begins. Right away, several of the girls fall in, proving that this mission is a lot harder than it looks. They all struggle to complete their first laps. Kristine is the first to finish, followed quickly by Lilly, then Taylor. Stefanie, Aeriel, Martina and Anna are having a lot of trouble even making it to the first landing. Soon, Lilly emerges as the clear leader, gracefully finishing each lap without ever falling in the water! She finishes the entire game minutes before some girls even have their first lap, securing her spot on the show. Gradually, other girls complete the game: Taylor, Kristine and Cealey respectively all become official Endurance players. It comes down to the fight for the last two spots: Aeriel, Anna, Martina and Stefanie must find a way to endure their exhaustion to claim a spot in the game.

In Balance is the Key, all the competitors have to walk on thin balance beams over the lake, and complete 5 laps across and back. If they fall, they have to climb up and keep going.

Balance is the Key
As we all know, life can be difficult. No matter how much success a person enjoys or how well their life seems to be unfolding, everyone experiences difficult times and situations. Looking at it from this perspective life is an equal opportunity experience. Each person has the same opportunity to experience joy, happiness, love, sadness or fear and the myriad emotions available to humanity.
The interesting and empowering aspect of this perspective is that we get to choose how we experience life. Events might be outside of our control, however, the experience of each event is not. We can allow an event to determine how we will experience life or we can take responsibility and consciously choose how the event will impact our life.
Being an independent business person, as an example, running one’s own business can and will take over every aspect of life if we allow it to. All too often we ignore the other equally important aspects of life in order to make sure the business is running smoothly, all of the details have been covered, and the bills will be paid without realizing the impact this has on our family, relationships, health and overall well-being.
Balance is the key.
When we have balance, we give equal importance to every aspect of life. Yes, there are times when one aspect takes precedence over the others, however, it is only when there is something pressing or needs extra attention that we do so.
Bringing balance to our daily life often brings about a sense of calm, peace and groundedness. This results in less stress allowing us to be present to whatever we are doing while in the moment. When we are in balance we are motivated, inspired, more engaged, more productive, and ultimately happier with ourselves and life.
So how do we gain this elusive way of living called balance? Here are 5 clarifying questions that when answered will help put all aspects of life, including business, in proper perspective.
Who am I? This question addresses the “who” that is not the name, the labels, the roles, the achievements or the “stuff” acquired in life. It is a question of who you are above and beyond those things. While not an easy question to answer, taking the time to do so is worthwhile and productive. As you get clear on who you are you realize you are much more than you believe yourself to be and that no one aspect of life, especially business, defines you. As you live in the full expression of who you are you will find life presenting more and more ways to enjoy that expression and life itself becomes more enjoyable.
Why am I here? This question can be interpreted in a couple of ways. First, we could look at it as our life’s purpose, what we are here to do and experience. Or, we can look at it from the perspective of what is the purpose of life, why are any of us here? (But that’s another topic altogether) You might wonder what this question has to do with gaining balance in life. If you have an idea of why you are here, of your purpose, you will begin making decisions and taking actions that lead to the fulfillment of that purpose. You will quickly come to realize that being a successful business person or whatever role you have chosen to play is not your purpose but instead, a means, or one of many means, for your purpose to be expressed. To reveal what might be considered your life’s purpose ask yourself these questions.
What am I good at?
What do I like to do?
What am I most passionate about?
What would I do if time and money were not a concern?
Why do I do what I do? This question gets to the heart of why you are in the business you are in. Many real estate professionals that I have coached will answer initially with a response that has something to do with the amount of money they can make, their love for houses or they are good with people. And while these answers are legitimate and might appear to be the correct answer for that individual they are usually incomplete. Dig deeper in your response to determine what making good money can do for you. Does it allow you to provide for your family in the manner you desire? Does it allow you to exercise your gifts and talents? Does it allow you the opportunity to be of service to others? And perhaps the most important question, how does it make you feel about you? Getting to the core of your “why” is crucial in obtaining balance in life. It gives you the perspective needed to recognize those aspects of life that are the most important to you, and gives you the clarity to be sure each is being properly addressed.
Where can I make adjustments? Awareness is the key. Simply be aware of what you truly desire, aware of the opportunities around you, and aware of how you feel when you are engaged in, not only activities that make you feel good about yourself but those activities that throw you out of balance. With this awareness, you can make decisions that lead to the balance you desire. You are the authority in your life. Yes, there are outside influences such as difficult situations and people that can affect a decision; however, you ultimately make the final decision as to what you will or won’t do.
Am I willing? Gaining clarity on what you most desire and enjoy in life and how you can achieve balance to allow these experiences is just the beginning of the process. Now you have to answer the question of your willingness to do what is necessary to achieve and experience the balance you say you desire.
A quote I have been using for years in my coaching practice that gets to the heart of any achievement is; “Nothing works if you don’t.”You can have all of the information and tools necessary, however if you are not willing to do the work you will not have the experience you set out to have.
Living in balance is a personal feeling and experience unique to each of us that cannot be described or defined. It is a sense of well-being and ease that we seek and enjoy when in the midst of it. In fact, while in balance we’re more alive, more productive, more energized, more motivated and more enthusiastic. Life itself is more enjoyable and exciting. And we are more enjoyable and exciting to be around.
All of this now brings us back to the business of being a successful business person and living in balance. Read the description above of someone in balance. Isn’t this the type of person you enjoy being around? Isn’t this the type of person with whom you would most likely want to engage in business and personal activities?
Doesn’t it stand to reason that if you are a “balanced” person more people would want to be around you? And from a business perspective, want to work with you? When you create balance with your life and work you create a happier, more productive, more enjoyable you.
