Articles

  • Caveat from your teacher: Articles are exceedingly complex and somewhat intuitive for those who have worked with English for a long time (or use it as their Mother Tongue). There may be multiple interpretations of the following answer key, so DO NOT FRET if you have different answers. Depending on the context and reading of the sentence, there may be many variations possible. However, as a language teacher and native speaker of English, I have given you the answers that I would give. If you have questions or would like justifications, please bring them to class!
Uncountable Countable
money, energy, equipment, progress, research, information, knowledge, machinery, traffic, vegetation, work commodity, complication, computer, device, discrepancy, problem, proposal, research project, researcher, fracture, model, society, theory

TASK TWO
a, an, the or zero article

zero Writing is a complex sociocognitive process involving the construction of zero recorded messages on zero paper or some other material and, more recently, on a computer screen. The Skills needed to write range from making zero appropriate graphic marks, through utilizing the resources of a chosen language, to anticipating the reactions of zero intended readers. zero Writing as composing needs to be distinguished from the simpler task of zero copying. zero Writing is slower than the other skills of zero listening, zero reading, and zero speaking. It is further slowed by the processes of zero thinking, zero rereading what has been written, and zero revising. zero Writing is not a natural ability like zero speaking but has to be acquired through zero years of zero training or zero schooling. Although zero writing systems have been in existence for about 5,000 years, even today, only a minority of the world’s population knows how to write.

TASK THREE
a, an, the, or zero article

As the average population of the United States has increased, so too has the number of zero hearing impaired individuals. Approximately zero 20 million hearing aids are now in use, and this number is expected to rise. Although there have been zero considerable advances in zero hearing aid technology, they still have a number of zero drawbacks, one of the most notable being problems in dealing with zero important environmental sounds. For example, zero people who are deaf in both ears are unable to determine the direction of a sound with a This limitation could result in an accident or injury if the wearer cannot decide the direction of a siren or zero other warning sound. zero Another problem concerns zero people suffering from zero high-frequency hearing loss. This type of zero (or a) hearing loss removes many consonants and other useful environmental noises, such as the ringing of the telephone.

TASK FOUR
Here is the edited passage:

To overcome these limitations, researchers have been investigating the possibility of a multiprogrammable hearing device that could perform two functions. One would be to convert high frequency information to low frequencies that fall in the range of normal hearing. The other would involve producing an LED display that could indicate the probable direction of sound. Since the same device can perform two functions, it could be used by a wider range of consumers than conventional devices. Prototypes of the device are currently being tested. If successful, it should be commercially available within the next five years.

TASK FIVE
a, an, the, or zero article

Much has been learned about the brain in the last 150 years. The brain, the most complicated organ of the body, contains zero ten billion nerve cells and is divided into zero two cerebral hemispheres—one on the right and one on the left. Interestingly, the left hemisphere controls zero movements on the right side of the body, while the right hemisphere controls zero movements on the left.

zero Researchers also know that zero specific abilities and behaviors are localized; in zero other words, they are controlled by zero specific areas of the brain. zero Language, it seems, is highly localized in the left hemisphere. In the 1860s Dr. Paul Broca discovered that zero damage to zero the front left part of the brain resulted in zero telegraphic speech similar to that of young children. Soon thereafter, Karl Wernicke found that zero damage to the back left part of the brain resulted in zero speech with zero little semantic meaning. These two regions in the brain are now referred to as zero Broca’s area and zero Wernicke’s area.

Although there is some debate surrounding the specialization of the brain, zero researchers generally agree that zero speech is controlled by the left side. There is no debate that in a great majority of cases, zero injuries to the left side nearly always have an impact on zero speech.
