There is a great number of people who say that flights to space were the greatest development of the previous century. While others claim that exploring the space was not the biggest achievement. In this essay, I will express my point of view on this issue.
In my opinion, flights to space were not the greatest achievement of the 20th century. First, costs involved in space exploration are enormous and the money could be spent on more pressing issues. Second, space exploration had no practical use to develop it at that time and now. Undoubtedly, there may be some practical use in the distant future, such as possibly colonizing other planets, but it distracted people from solving more important issues like ecology situation and climate change. Dreaming about colonizing Mars humanity recklessly uses the resources of their own planet.

However, some people think that the greatest achievement of the previous century definitely was space exploration. It was the breakthrough for the development of technologies used in our everyday life. Portable computers, tablets, memory foam, wireless headsets, computer mouse and many other very useful things are the result of space exploration. There are also a lot of new materials and technologies used in medicine, construction and other fields.
Despite the fact that space exploration improved our lives and moved the science on a new level, I cannot agree with that opinion simply because without electrification and other previous achievements made in 20th centuries humanity wouldn’t be able to start exploring the space.
To summarize, I would like to say that space exploration was not the greatest achievements of the previous century. Despite its enormous contribution to our development, there were other greater achievements, which changed human life dramatically.

Мечтая о колонизации Марса, человечество небрежно использует ресурсы собственной планеты.
Однако некоторые считают, что самым большим достижением прошлого века, безусловно, стало освоение космоса. Это был прорыв в развитии технологий, используемых в нашей повседневной жизни. Портативные компьютеры, планшеты, пена памяти, беспроводные гарнитуры, компьютерная мышь и многое другое — результат освоения космоса. Также появилось много новых материалов и технологий, используемых в медицине, строительстве и других областях.
Несмотря на то, что освоение космоса улучшило нашу жизнь и вывело науку на новый уровень, я не могу согласиться с этим мнением просто потому, что без электрификации и других предыдущих достижений 20 века человечество не смогло бы начать исследование космоса.
Подводя итог, я хотел бы сказать, что освоение космоса не было величайшим достижением прошлого века. Несмотря на огромный вклад в наше развитие, были другие более значительные достижения, которые кардинально изменили жизнь людей.

It is common knowledge that the twentieth century is the beginning of space exploration. Many people claim that it was the most significant achievement of the last century. However, there are those who think that there were more meaningful discoveries.
In my opinion, there are numerous advantages to the space exploration. Firstly, Yuri Gagarin’s flight encouraged many other cosmonauts to explore huge and mysterious space. This first flight proved that people can survive in the cosmos and explore it as well. Secondly, from the first experiments scientists could systematic their knowledge of astronomy. Now we know a lot about the solar system, different planets and our own planet Earth thanks to the space exploration.
Nevertheless, the opponents of this view argue that space research was not the greatest event of the previous century.

They say that there were other useful discoveries for mankind such as mobile phones, computers and Internet connection. In comparison with them, space exploration does not have positive impact on our society.
Despite this, I disagree. I think there is a direct link between the development of space research programmes and different earth technologies. For instance, the satellite provides us with television programmes, weather forecast and many other things.
In conclusion, I am firmly convinced that space research was the biggest success of the twentieth century even though there are different opinions.
All in all i agree with this point of view.

Exploration of outer space in the 20th century has produced discoveries and inventions that will forever change the way people live, learn and interact.
The dream of space travel is as old as history but in the 20th century the dream became reality with astonishing swiftness. As you recall, the first aeroplane flight occurred in 1903 and in 1926 the first liquid-fuelled rocket was launched that travelled 200 feet.
After World War II, the superpower opposition between the USA and the Soviet Union stimulated rocket research and development. Both nations realized that large rockets can be used to attack an enemy from thousands of miles away and that satellites put into orbit around the Earth by rockets could transmit messages.
The Soviet launch of sputnik, the first man-made object to overcome gravity, began the space age. The Soviet Union soon achieved many other firsts. In 1961, the Soviet Union put the first man, Yuri Gagarin, into space. The first long space flights, a woman in space and space walk were all Soviet achievements. The Soviet Union still retains its leadership in the peaceful application of space exploration. In its Salyut 6, it investigated such vital matters as the causes of cancer, since cells are studied in gravity-free space. The construction of metals that can resist gravity has resulted in tools of incredible hardness; improved seeds have been developed in Salyut.
In the early 1960s the United States organized the Apollo space program. This research program concentrated on landing a man on the moon. Two Americans, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrim, walked on the lunar surface in July 1961.
Since the first moon landing, many nations have developed programs of space exploration. A network of communication satellites made world-wide television and telephone service possible. Space shuttles allowed regular trips between Earth and space. Scientific satellites were put in the Earth’s orbit. Voyages to Venus were made by the Soviet spaceships, voyages to Mars, Jupiter and Saturn — by the American spaceships.
This scientific progress has since resulted in hundreds of benefits for mankind, from the weather satellites whose information we see in our daily newspapers and on TV, to determining from outer space where fish is, where natural resources are hidden in the earth and in discovering areas which are becoming deserts.

The 20th century was remarkable for its fast progress in science and technology. Some people see exploring outer space as the main accomplishment of the previous century, whereas others believe that there were more significant attainments.
As for me, I support the first opinion. To begin with, spaceflights were a major breakthrough because they differed radically from everything man had achieved over many centuries. For the first time in history humans travelled beyond the Earth’s atmosphere to learn more about the universe. Additionally, space exploration showed the greatness of the human mind and spirit, brought all nations together and fostered international cooperation in various fields.
However, there are people who think differently. They are convinced that computer technologies revolutionized the world in the 20th century, and people continue to benefit from them now. At the same time, my opponents consider space exploration to be a waste of time and money.
I cannot agree with the opposing statement. The necessity to explore space gave an impetus to scientific and technological innovation and paved the way for brand-new industries. Once developed, space science began to pay dividends in terms of practical use: artificial satellites helped and still help to navigate, provide telecommunications and monitor the weather.
In conclusion, I would like to say that space exploration marked the beginning of a new era for human civilization. It largely contributed to globalization and brought about profound changes in people’s lives. Therefore, it can be regarded as the greatest achievement of the 20th century.

Прежде всего, напомним, что Ваше эссе по английскому языку должно осветить ВСЕ аспекты, изложенные в задании, а также должно быть написано в соответствующем стиле (нейтральном). Оно должно логично делиться на абзацы и соответствовать предложенному в задании плану.
Предположим на экзамене перед Вами следующая задача:

Some people think that we should explore space and visit other planets. Other people say that space exploration is a waste of time and money.
What is your opinion? Do you agree with this statement?
Write 200-250 words.
Use the following plan:

In conclusion, I would like to say it is difficult to keep doing space exploration when our national economic situation is not that good. Nevertheless, we should keep investing into space exploration because I strongly believe that one day it will bring the desired results. Thus, I support the idea that space exploration is worth doing. 56

Присутствует общее представление темы «издалека» указание на её проблемность.
Издалека начинать не обязательно, можно сразу “в лоб” – Some people believe ….. However, others state that ….. Если сумеете грамотно перефразировать тему – никто не накажет. С другой стороны, вступление издалека выглядит красиво. Если сможете его хорошо написать – почему бы и нет?
Абзац 2. Собственная точка зрения и 2-3 аргумента в её поддержку.
Мнение по проблеме присутствует (первое предложение абзаца).
I think that we should definitely explore space and spend as much money as required.
Также изложено 3 аргумента с подтверждениями с использованием средств логической связи предложений.
First of all, our planet cannot exist forever. One day it will end and humans will have to move somewhere to continue living. Second, underground resources are finite and they will eventually end. В заключении надо суммировать всё, о чем говорилось в эссе и выразить свою точку зрения. Помните – никакой новой информации!
In conclusion, I would like to say it is difficult to keep doing space exploration when our national economic situation is not that good.
Далее даём читающему понять, что существует две точки зрения на данную проблему, Nevertheless, we should keep investing into space exploration because I strongly believe that one day it will bring the desired results.
