Now lets train our tongues. Listen to the cassette and repeat, please (p. 118, ex. 2)

take, make, date, late, plate, hate, pancake

  • Light takes a long time to come from the stars.
  • The moon makes tides.
  • I hate pancakes.

Very good, children, and now answer my questions, please:

  1. What is the name of our planet?
  2. What do you know about the moon?
  3. Name the smallest planet in our solar system.
  4. How do you think is there life on the other planets?
  5. Why do you think there is a life on Earth?
  6. Who was the first man in space?

We have learnt the song “Space”. Lets sing it for our guests.

You did it well, thanks. Now listen to me. In 1969 Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin went to the moon in the Apollo XI rocket. Open your books at page 40, look at the pictures and listen to what the astronauts and the television presenter said at that time 6.1.

And now look at the exercise 6.2. You have six pictures in your books. Your task is to write six sentences what do you think the television presenter said for this pictures. Please, use the Present Continues Tense. Let’s remember how do we form this tense.

Tell me please how do you think is there life on the other planets? Let’s read the text and learn what do scientists think of it. (Чтение текста “Is there life on other planets”). Do you want to see the alien? What would you tell him about the Earth?

Well, now we can relax and play your favourite game “Bingo”. The rules of this game you know- you have cards with the words of our theme on them. You must listen to me very attentively and delete words that you’ll hear. Who will be the first is the winner. Is it clear? Let’s begin.

Light, Earth, moon, telescope, rocket, universe, Mars, tide, neighbour, spaceship, alien, sky, star, satellite, planet, Venus, space, Saturn.

And our winner for today is… I congratulate you.

Now you’ll get the shits with the task. I’ll read you the text and you match the dates and achievements in the exploration of space.

How does a rocket work? Modern rocket have a liquid fuel and something to help it to burn. This makes a powerful exhaust through the back of the rocket and pushes the rocket up. Let’s see it. We’ll tie a long piece of string to a door handle, blow up the balloon and stick a drinking straw on it. Then put the string through the straw. Now we must hold the string tight and let go of the balloon. Now we’ll get more balloons and will have a race with each other. Who will be the first pair?

Write down your homework for the next lesson- page 119, ex. 4 – you must write a postcard from other planet and draw a poster. All of you were well today. you’ve got good and excellent marks. The bell is ringing. Thank you for the lesson, have a good day!

Teacher: Read text 3 and doing the tasks.

People often think that the age of space exploration began with the first space- ships in the 1950s and 1960s, though in fact, astronomers had been exploring the universe long before the beginning of space flights. Galileo made the first optical telescope used for astronomy in 1609. Later scientists got a lot more in- formation about the solar system and its planets with the help of interplanetary probes’, space capsules that carry special equipment and send information back to the Earth. From the beginning of the space age, both the Soviet Union and the United States were active in the exploration of the solar system. Both countries had their own space programmes, competing with each other. Both countries sent their probes to the Moon, to Venus, Mars and, later, to Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Anyhow a real breakthrough² in space exploration was the begin- ning of manned space flights. The first manned flight took place on April 12, 1961, when Yuri Gagarin went into orbit in the Soviet Vostok 1 spaceship and proved that man could survive in space. At the same time the USA carried on its programme of the Moon exploration and in 1969 Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the Moon. In 1975 the USSR and the USA made the first space experiment [ik’sperimənt] together. The future of space exploration seems to be connected with cooperation work in space. People’s wish to know about the world around us will never be satisfied and we can get the best results if we do this hard work together.

1 True or false!

  1. Firstly two country start to sent their probes to Jupiter Saturn Uranus and Neptune and LATER to the Moon Venus Mars
  2. The first flight in Soviet Union was on April 1961 by Neil Armstrong
  3. The USA and Soviet Union have program experiment which they have done together
  4. Space exploration is very hard work but people should learn this separate
  5. Everyone is convinced that the beginning of space development start in the 1950s and 1960s but really its mistake

2 Answer the Questions

  1. What equipment helped scientists and had the ability to send data back?
  2. Exploration this is a noun/ you should write relative verb?
  3. In the beginning the USA and Soviet Union were partners or opponents?
  4. What mean word COOPERATION?

interplanetary probes 1961 space

Galileo 1975 moon

Yuri Gagarin 1609 telescope

Neil Aкmstrong 1969 USSR USA

Partners carry and send information to Earth

Teacher: Thank you very much, all of you. Today you have learnt a lot of information about space. Let’s go back to Armstrong’s words “ That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” How do you understand this phrase? What is your attitude to these words?

Teacher: What did you learn in the lesson?

Pl 1: We learned about Armstrong, about space exploration.

Teacher: What did you learn in class?

Pl 2: We have learned to pronounce planets correctly in English

Teacher: What would you like to know?

Pl3: We would like to learn more about space exploration.

Teacher: Everyone gets good marks. The lesson is over. Goodbye!

T: Good morning, boys and girls!

Cl: Good morning!

T: I am very glad to see you and hope you are ready to work. You are a ninth-former, a school student who can look back and think a little about the future. This year is difficult for you, isn’t it?

P: Yes, it is. We will have to take examinations when the school year is over.

P: The school programmer is not so easy. Our main task now is to be well prepared for each exams.

T: How important is knowledge in modern life?

P: Knowledge helps us to choose a profession.

P: Knowledge helps us to work well in that profession.

P: Knowledge helps us to be active? Useful citizens of our country.

T: OK! It’s very good. Some of you may already know what will be by profession others have not decided yet. Of course, it is not easy to decide as there are different professions but let us hope that you will make a right choice. First of all you will have to take examinations when the school year is over. What can you say about English exam?

P: As I know National Examination of English language consists of Listening, Reading, Grammar, Speaking and Writing.

T: You are right! The theme of our lesson is Space exploration. Today we are going to read, listen to the text , speak about space and the history of space exploration and at the same time we shall do some exercises of national Examination Format to improve your listening, reading, speaking skills. Let me start by asking you about the Solar System. I wonder if you could explain exactly what the Solar System is.

P: Yes, of course! There are billion of solar systems in the universe. A solar system always has a big star at the centre. Lots of other smaller things like planets, comets, asteroids, all go round that star. Our star is the Sun and so our solar system is everything that goes round the Sun– the Earth, our Moon and the planets.

T: Do you know how many planets are there in our solar system?

T: Call the names of the planets and find the right places for them in the picture.

Mercury Neptune Earth Saturn Mars Venus Uranus Jupiter

T: people think that the age of space exploration began with the first spaceships in the 1950s, don’t they?

P: I’m not quite sure but I think they are wrong. Astronomers had been exploring the universe long before the beginning of space flights. Galileo made the first optical telescope used for astronomy in 1609.

P: I read scientists got a lot more information about the solar system and its planets with help of interplanetary probes, space capsules that carry special equipment and send information back to Earth.

II.

T: It’s great! Now please, read the text about space exploration. Open your textbooks page 166 ex 10. Do you see the letters NEF? What do they mean?

P: They mean that this is the exercise of National Examination Format.

T: OK! At first let’s remember some reading recommendations for exam.

T: Now please check up this exercise.
